This is the anointing of whole body with oil. Often infused with herbs and usually warm, the oil is massaged into the entire body before bathing. It can be beneficial for maintaining health and is used therapeutically for certain disorders. Ayurveda teaches that the effects of Abhyanga pass through minute channels in the body and penetrate deep layers of tissue. The duration can be 45 minutes to 1 hour.
Udvardhanam (Powder Massage): In Udvardhanam herbal powders used for massage. The herbal powders are mixed with oil, milk or medicated juice and rubbed upwards onto the body. In this massage two therapists apply certain warm herbal powders and deeply massage the body with specific upward movements for about 30 to 45 minutes daily for a period of 7 to 14 days. The treatment improves the blood circulation and reduces body weight and skin diseases. It also helps in curing hemiplegia and paralysis.
Sirodhara: Sirodhara is a unique form of ancient therapy of pouring oil on the forehead from a specific height and for a specific period continuously and rhythmically allowing the oil to run through the scalp and hair. It is a purifying and rejuvenating therapy made to eliminate toxins and mental exhaustion and relieve stress and any ill effects on the central nervous system.
Nasyam: This is one of the important Panchakarma therapies that involve administering medicated oil or herbal juice preparations or Medicated ghee or Herbal powder through nose for the period of time prescribed by the doctor. It is done after medicated steam inhalation. Nasyam is a very important treatment for discomfort in the head region. It acts by removing the excess humours accumulated in the different sinus cavities and throat.
Vamanam: Vamanam is also known as therapeutic vomiting, which is a medicated emesis therapy. People with high imbalance of kapha are given this type of treatment, which loosens and mobilizes the toxins, in an effort to eliminate them from the body. And wastes are eliminated through the upper gastrointestinal tract. This medicated vomiting therapy removes Kapha toxins collected in the body especially from the respiratory system. This treatment is given to people with high Kapha imbalance. The therapist induces vomiting by a drink containing liquorice and honey, calamus root tea or drinks with salt and cardamom and with the help of rubbing on the tongue.
Virechanam: Virechanam in Ayurveda’s panchakarma is purgation treatment using herbal medicines. It helps to remove the toxic and metabolic waste for liver, gallbladder and intestinal tract. Ayurveda suggests Virechanam or therapeutic laxative, when excess bile (Pitta) is secreted and accumulated in the gall bladder, liver and small intestine, this situation result in rashes, skin inflammation, acne, chronic fever, vomiting, nausea and jaundice.
Mukha Lepanam (Herbal Facial): In this cosmetic therapy a honey or any other medicinal liquid based herbal paste is applied on the face of the person for a period of 15 to 20 minutes. Herbal paste may include herbal oils, milk, saffron, sandal wood powder, turmeric, fruits etc depends on the nature of skin of the person. This therapy unclogs the pores of the facial skin and removes impurities, thereby improving the tone and texture of the skin. This helps removing the dead cells and enrich the skin. This is an important part of Ayurvedic Beauty Care programme, where the herbal paste is applied externally over the body as per the condition of the skin.
Vasthi (Therapeutic enema):
Vasthi is considered as the mother of all Panchakarma treatments and is used for cleansing the toxins of all three doshas, Vata, Pitta and Kapha after having loosened them. Ancient texts says that Vasti alone can reduce 50% of illness from the body. Vasti is the treatment where herbal medicines like medicated oils, decoctions, medicated milk or ghee are administered through rectum using an instrument called Vasthiyantra. The medicated liquid stays inside the colon and normally after 45 minutes or an hour the fluid will be ejected out, which will contains toxins along with the faecal matters.
Swedanam (Herbal Steam Bath): This is done with the help of a steam chamber to perspire the person. Oil should be gently applied on the body and the patient is made to sit in the chamber where steam emanates from a boiling herbal decoction which is made of various herbs and medicated powder.  The purpose of Swedana is to increase body temperature which opens the channel system resulting in increased circulation. This allows toxins to flow out of the body with sweat. There are several ways by which swedanam can be induced. Treatment should be continued till the forehead and abdomen sweat very well. Eyes are to be protected and wrapped with a piece of cloth while doing sudation. Eyes, feet, palms, chest and testicles should not be heated very much.
