Panchakarma alone can cure many chronic diseases in some cases, and further treatments are not even required afterwards. Panchakarma Treatments are 1. Nsyam, 2. Vamanam, 3.Virechanam, 4. This treatment is given to people with high Kapha imbalance. The therapist induces vomiting by a drink containing liquorice and honey, calamus root tea or drinks with salt and cardamom and with the help of rubbing on the tongue.

Virechanam in Ayurveda’s panchakarma is purgation treatment using herbal medicines. It helps to remove the toxic and metabolic waste for liver, gallbladder and intestinal tract. Ayurveda suggests Virechanam or therapeutic laxative, when excess bile (Pitta) is secreted and accumulated in the gall bladder, liver and small intestine, this situation result in rashes, skin inflammation, acne, chronic fever, vomiting, nausea and jaundice.
The medicines used for the Virechanam are to vitiate the doshas and bring them into the abdomen. During the procedure, the patient is subjected to Oleation first, then Fomentation, which is followed by Emesis and and Samsarjana Karma (post operative). The dose of medicines, diet patterns are to be strictly followed as per the doctor’s recommendation. Virechanam, must be under the supervision of doctors. Herbal medicines like Kashayam (decoction), Lehyam (semi solid) etc., are also taken orally as part of the post operative procedure.

Vasthi (Therapeutic enema):
Vasthi is considered as the mother of all Panchakarma treatments and is used for cleansing the toxins of all three doshas, Vata, Pitta and Kapha after having loosened them. Ancient texts says that Vasti alone can reduce 50% of illness from the body. Vasti is the treatment where herbal medicines like medicated oils, decoctions, medicated milk or ghee are administered through rectum using an instrument called Vasthiyantra. There are three types of Vasthi –Kashayavasti, Snehavasti and Uttaravasti. Among these Kashayavasthi and snehavasti are most commonly practised. In Kashayavasthi the treatment is done with a combination of honey, rock-salt, oil, herbal paste and decoction. In Snehavasthi medicated oil and ghee is administered through rectum. In Uttaravasthi the vasthi is given through urethral or vaginal tract. The medicated liquid stays inside the colon and normally after 45 minutes or an hour the fluid will be ejected out, which will contains toxins along with the faecal matters.
Kashaya Vasthi & Sneha Vasthi are always used in combination. In usual procedure Snehavasthi is given first to lubricate the body, followed by Kashayavasthi to purify the body.
Traditionally, cow or buffalo urinary bladders are filled up with medicated liquids and used for enema. The bladder has now been substituted with advanced equipments.
Benefits of Vasthi: Vasthi helps in relieving constipation, chronic fever, cold, Sexual Debility & Infertility, kidney stones, heart pain, backache, sciatica, pains in the joints as well as arthritis, rheumatism, gout, muscle spasms & headaches. And helps in the treatments of Hemiplegia, Paraplegia, Colitis, Convalescence, Cervical Spondylosis, Irritable Bowel Syndrome Constipation, Digestive disorders, Hepatomegaly & Splenomegaly, Obesity etc.
Raktha Moksham (bloodletting):
This is the last action in panchakarma. Usually toxins present in the gastro-intestinal tract are absorbed into the blood and circulated throughout the body. This causes repeated infections in the body and such condition is called Toxemia. In such condition purification of blood becomes necessary. Along with internal medication for elimination of the toxins, a non-poisonous leech is employed on the skin to suck the vitiated blood from the body.
The place of the leech application has to be rubbed with dry powder prior to the procedure of bloodletting. If the leech does not catch the place one or two drops of honey, ghee or blood are poured or a small incision is made on the body of patient. When leech starts sucking blood it should be covered with a soft cloth soaked in cold water. When pain and itching feels at the site of the leech application it indicates that the leech is sucking pure blood and it should be removed. Turmeric powder is sprinkled over to remove the leech smoothly.
Benefits of Raktha Moksham: This process purifies the blood from toxins and stimulates the spleen to produce anti-toxic substances which then stimulate the immune system. In cases of enlarged liver, spleen and gout bloodletting is also indicated as a proper treatment. It is said to help repeated infections of skin disorders such as acne, urticaria, rashes, scabies, herpes, eczema, leukoderma, chronic itching or hives.
