Chembra Peak, Wayanad, Kerala

Product Description

District: Wayanad, Kerala, India
Elevation: 2,100 metres above sea level (6,900 ft)
Chembra Peak is on the southern part of Wayanad. Chembra is the tallest peak in Wayanad and is an ideal area for trekking.  The Wayanad hills of Kerala are a mosaic of green, the bright green of grasslands with patches of emerald where the shola forests thrive dense and dark. The hike towards Chembra Peak (6,900 ft. above sea level), the highest in Wayanad Hill range of Western Ghats, takes you along a heart shaped Lake which is believed to never dried up, and of course  with some challenges enjoy trekking. But all the effort is rewarded as you reach the peak and catch a glimpse of the valley, scrubbed clean and fresh by the rain. The trek up to Chembra Peak on the whole takes about 4 hours for medium paced trekkers. On a cloudy day, you can get engulfed in the clouds which play hide and seek with you throughout.
Trekking: From Kalpetta in Wayanad drive (40 minutes) to the base of trek near the small town called Meppadi and get entry pass to the forest. Forest guides are available here. Then drive to the watch tower through the beautiful rolling tea gardens.  Park your vehicle after the tower and start trekking. There is a moderate climb up and in half an hour you find yourself out of the forest cover. In half an hour you reach a relatively flat area. After another inclined climb for 15 minutes you come to the heart shaped lake of Chembra Peak.  Don’t get mistaken that the peak in front of the lake is Chembra Peak,  what you see from here is only the first of the 6 peaks to come, If you don’t know the exact number of peaks you have to cover, you are always under the false hope that what you see ahead is the final one. All you have to do is head up and keep trekking up to the highest peak. Two more hours trek from the heart shaped lake will take you to the final destination, Chembra Peak. A fitting end to the trek would be a drive to the nearby Soochippara(sentinel rocks) waterfalls are 200 m (656 ft) in height and offers a cliff face that is good for rock climbing.
