Ellora, Ajantha and Aurangabad Dance Festival is held in the splendid premises of the World-heritage listed cave temple of Ellora, about 30km from Aurangabad, Maharashtra. Ellora comprises of about 34 caves cut out of the sloping side of the Chamadri hills. Excavated between 600-1000 AD, the caves belong to Buddhists, Jain and Hindu faiths. The masterpiece of Ellora is the Kailasanath Temple. It is the world’s largest monolithic sculpture, sculpted out of a single rock by 7000 workers over a 150 year period.
A cluster of 29 rock-cut caves at Ajanta is about 109 Kms from Ellora which date back to the 2nd century BC. This is also a site of great historical importance. The cave walls are adorned with beautiful paintings, sculptures & frescos which are believed to be masterpieces of the Buddhist religious art.
