Shalakya Tantra (ENT)
Ayurveda has a separate branch for ear, nose and throat conditions. The details are described with corresponding medicines in salakyatantra, the ENT branch of Ayurveda. The major classics of Ayurveda ?are Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita and Ashtanga Hridaya, all of them deals with Shalakya Tantra. In texts of Ayurvedic ancient scholars had mentioned almost all the disorders described in modern medicine and their respective treatments with herbal formations, there are special panchakarma techniques and external therapies which can cure those disorders.
According to Ayurveda there are 72 types eye diseases, 11 types of lip diseases, 1 type of lymph disease, 23 types of dental diseases, 6 types of tongue diseases, eight type of palate diseases, 18 types throat diseases and 8 diseases affecting mouth cavity and face.
Below are the usually used Ayurvedic therapies for ENT disorders. And the treatments varies from case to case. And the following treatments has different classifications as well.
Karnapooranam:
In Karana Puranam warm oil or medicated liquid are poured in to the ears Or keeping medicated oils inside the ears in a small artificially created tank, with the help of special pastes. The treatment is continued for 5-10 minutes. This treatment is useful in certain neurological complaints of ear, loss of hearing and tinnitus etc. This process of keeping warm oil inside ears is calming and protective to the nervous system. Especially recommended during Vata season, a time of regular exposure to cold and wind. However, karana purana is effective for all seasons for calming the nervous system and overactive mind. When ears of patient are bathed in oil, the mind and body calms and creates a state of deep relaxation. As per Ayurveda, the ears and eyes are connected with the sole of the foot. The application of oil in the ears produces a cooling effect which eliminates the sensation of burning to the feet.
Usually done, when there is excess earwax, earache, headache, neck pain, and jaw pain, tinnitus, and impaired hearing due to wax blockages and impurities in the ear canal. This treatment is also used for most Vata disorders relating to bodily aches and pains.
Nasyam:
Nasyam is one of the important Panchakarma therapies that involve administering medicated oil or herbal juice preparations or Herbal powder through nose for the period of time prescribed by the doctor. It is done after medicated steam inhalation. Nasyam is a very important treatment for discomfort in the head region. It acts by removing the excess humours accumulated in the different sinus cavities and throat. Nasyam is highly effective for different kinds of migraine, hormonal imbalances, paralysis, mental disorders, premature graying of hair, loss of smell and taste and even can add clarity to voice. It cleanses the different cavities and increases oxygenation thus improving brain functioning. Nasyam not only helps in removing toxins from the head, neck, brain, eyes, ear, nose and throat region, it also gives immunity to these parts. The duration of Nasyam is 5 to 10 minutes.

Gandoosham:
Gandoosham is simply gargling of warm medicinal liquid,decoctions etc. Medicinal oil juices and decoctions are kept in the mouth and gargled for 10 to 15 minutes and then washed off with warm saline water. This is very good in treating different ailments of the mouth from mouth ulcers to cancer of the mouth.
It treats many ailments of the ear, nose, eye, throat, mouth canal, and head. Common complaints like sinusitis, anorexia, nausea, dryness of mouth, foul smell, Bell’s palsy, mouth ulcer, teeth and gum diseases, etc. are relieved after the treatment.
Sirodhara:
Shirodhara is a unique form of ancient therapy of pouring oil on the forehead from a specific height and for a specific period continuously and rhythmically allowing the oil to run through the scalp and hair. It is a purifying and rejuvenating therapy made to eliminate toxins and mental exhaustion and relieve stress and any ill effects on the central nervous system.  Shirodhara is also known as Third Eye Treatment of Lord Shiva. Siro Dhara is usually given for a duration of 45 minutes and to be continued from 7 to 21 days.
Benifits of Shirodhara: Shirodhara enhances blood circulation to the brain, improves memory, nourishes hair and scalp, assists in providing sound sleep and calms the body and mind. Shirodhara is one of the most effective treatments for reducing stress and nervous disorders. Prevents hair lose, premature graying and cracking of hair, Relieves headache and burning sensation of the head, Helps relieve fatigue, tension, anxiety, anger, chronic headaches, rheumatism, improves concentration, intelligence, confidence and self-esteem, Good for hypertension, asthma, stress and much more.
Virechanam:
Virechanam in Ayurveda’s panchakarma is purgation treatment using herbal medicines. It helps to remove the toxic and metabolic waste for liver, gallbladder and intestinal tract. Ayurveda suggests Virechanam or therapeutic laxative, when excess bile (Pitta) is secreted and accumulated in the gall bladder, liver and small intestine, this situation result in rashes, skin inflammation, acne, chronic fever, vomiting, nausea and jaundice.  After giving medicines we wait for around 2 hours. By this time patient gets first motion, then we regularly give liquid medicines to get more motions. This is for the purpose of eliminating toxins from the body. As toxins are over, motion stops immediately.
The medicines used for the Virechanam are to vitiate the doshas and bring them into the abdomen. During the procedure, the patient is subjected to Oleation first, then Fomentation, which is followed by Emesis and and Samsarjana Karma (post operative). The dose of medicines, diet patterns are to be strictly followed as per the doctor’s recommendation. Virechanam, must be under the supervision of doctors. Herbal medicines like Kashayam (decoction), Lehyam (semi solid) etc., are also taken orally as part of the post operative procedure.
Benefits of Virechanam: Virechanam helps in the treatments of gastrointestinal problems, diabetes, piles, abdominal tumors, skin disorders, irritable bowel syndrome, worms, constipation, digestive disorders, chronic fever, asthma, Paraplegia, Hemiplegia, headaches, joint disorders, Vitiligo, Psoriasis, hyperacidity, gout, jaundice, Elephantiasis and gynaecological disorders. Laxatives can completely cure the problem of excess bile (pitta).
Kashaya Vasthi: 
Vasti is the treatment where herbal medicines like medicated oils, decoctions, medicated milk or ghee are administered through rectum using an instrument called Vasthi Yanthram. The medicated liquid stays inside the colon and normally after 45 minutes or an hour the fluid will be ejected out, which will contains toxins along with the faecal matters. After evacuation he is given medicated bath and specially made rice pudding with milk & sugar. Vasthi is considered as the mother of all Panchakarma treatments and is used for cleansing the toxins of all three doshas, Vata, Pitta and Kapha after having loosened them. Ancient texts say that Vasti alone can reduce 50% of illness from the body.
Nethra Vasthi:
This is the process of keeping Medicated ghee or oil on the eyes for a certain period of time is called Netra Vasti (Akshi tarpanam).  This is a purification & rejuvenation treatment for eye. This therapy is useful foe healthy as well as people with diseases. Akshitapana is carried out to protect the eyes from degeneration due to the aging process and to improve the eyesight in healthy persons. In Ayurveda eye is considered to be a local route for drug administration. Thus akshi-tarpana gives positive results in patirents suffering from ophthalmic disorders.
Nethra Vasthi or Akshitarpana is done for Darkness around the eye, Dryness of eye, Injury to the eye, Squint, falling of eye lashes, Blurring of vision, Orbital cellulites, Difficulty in opening & closing, Conjunctivitis, Glaucoma, Fifth cranial nerve atrophy, Opacity of cornea, Eye watering, Pain, swolling And stiffness of eye.
