The fresh water of the lake runs into the mainland making a labyrinth of lagoons, brooks, canals and waterways. The water here is rich with aquatic life, a few to name is the exclusive ‘Kumarakom Karimeen’ (Pearl Spotted Fish), Konju (Tiger Prawns), Njandu (Crabs), Chemeen (Prawns). This cruise between Kollam & Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary through the palm-fringed, tranquil backwaters were once the state’s trade highways. The backwater routes date back over the centuries and have been long used for all transportation needs, in particular trade in coconut, rubber, rice and spices. The Ashtamudi lake, surrounded by red cliffs and swaying coconut palms, still bears traces of its former links with China.
