Kollam: Ashtamudi Lake the gateway to the backwaters of Kerala, branches out in 8 directions like palm-shaped (also called octopus-shaped) making its way through breathtaking landscape joins Vembanad Lake of “Venice of the East” (Alappuzha) through Kayamkulam Lake and many small lakes. Ashtamudi means ‘Eight Coned‘(Ashta, ‘eight’ & mudi, ‘coned’) in the local language of MalayalamAshtamudi Lake is the second largest and deepest wetland ecosystem next only to the Vembanad estuary ecosystem of Kerala state.
Kumarakom: A bunch of tiny islets on the Vembanad Lake, Kumarakom is a pictorial and tidy village. And the most invigorating, fascinating paradise in Kerala. Kumarakom’s charming emerald peninsula jutting into the ever-lively Vembanad Lake takes you into the heart of the scenic lake where you’ll come across plenty of traditional country crafts, boats and canoes. The fresh water of the lake runs into the mainland making a labyrinth of lagoons, brooks, canals and waterways. The water here is rich with aquatic life, a few to name is the exclusive ‘Kumarakom Karimeen’ (Pearl Spotted Fish), Konju (Tiger Prawns), Njandu (Crabs), Chemeen (Prawns).  Kumarakom’s never ending paddy fields, meandering lagoons, mangroves, Migratory & local water birds of much verieties. The cruise here can calm and invigorate you.
This cruise between Kollam & Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary through the palm-fringed, tranquil backwaters were once the state’s trade highways. The backwater routes date back over the centuries and have been long used for all transportation needs, in particular trade in coconut, rubber, rice and spices. The Ashtamudi lake, surrounded by red cliffs and swaying coconut palms, still bears traces of its former links with China. On this backwater cruise from Kollam to Kumarakom via Alappuzha all along the waterline you can see the famous Cheena Vala (Chinese fishing nets) gracefully hanging over the lake, as covered country boats ply the backwaters.
