Ayurvedic Diet Chart with guidelines: Increase usage of fresh fruits and vegetables, Decrease the usage of white breads and other processed foods, Avoid intake of too much salt, Cook with spices like cayenne, turmeric, black pepper, ginger and rock salt, Avoid refined sugars and carbonated drinks, Fasting once in a week by using fruit or vegetable juices, warm skim milk, light soups, teas, etc. Use vegetable oil in place of butter or margarine, Avoid milk products like cheese, butter etc and non-vegetarian foods as they are rich in fat. Mix one teaspoon of fresh honey with the juice of half a lime in a glass of lukewarm water and take several times a day at regular intervals, Avoid eating meat products as they slow digestion and cause heaviness.

Virechana in Panchakarma is the medicated purgation therapy, it is the cleansing of the Pitta (bile) and the purification of the blood toxins from the body that are accumulated in the liver and gallbladder, it completely cleanses the gastrointestinal tract. The removal of toxins from the system enhances the organs’ ability to better absorb nutrients and improves biological functions, which, in turn, accelerates the healing process. This detoxification supports the beginning of your weight loss programme.
The medicines used for the Virechanam are to vitiate the doshas and bring them into the abdomen. During the procedure, the patient is subjected to Oleation first, then Fomentation, which is followed by Emesis and and Samsarjana Karma (post operative). The dose of medicines, diet patterns are to be strictly followed as per the doctor’s recommendation. Virechanam, must be under the supervision of doctors. Herbal medicines like Kashayam (decoction), Lehyam (semi solid) etc., are also taken orally as part of the post operative procedure.
Udvardhana (Herbal Weight-loss Massage)
This Powder Massage done by using herbal powders is an effective treatment for weight reduction. Herbal powders are mixed with oil, milk or medicated juice and rubbed upwards onto the body. It is a kind of friction massage all over the body. In this massage two therapists apply warm herbal powders and deeply massage the body with specific upward movements for about 30 to 45 minutes daily for a period of 7 to 14 days. This treatment improves the blood circulation and reduces body weight and skin diseases. This also helps in removing cellulite, revitalisation of sense of touch, gives a good complexion to the skin and removes toxins from the body. This therapy is very effective in naturally reducing weight.
Abhyangam (Full Body Massage)
Abhyangam is an ancient Indian Ayurvedic oil massage therapy for healing and detoxifying Body, Mind and Spirit. . It can be beneficial for maintaining health and is used therapeutically for obesity. Ayurveda teaches that the effects of Abhyanga pass through minute channels in the body and penetrate deep layers of tissue. This ayurvedic detox and stress reduction therapy is performed by herbal oils. This is the anointing of the body with oil. The full body massage with warm medicated oils is given to help you expel toxins and balance specific conditions. The oils contain herbs that pacify elevated vata energy, a root cause of most ailments. Abhyangam can be done by hands & foot (Foot Massage)
Nasyam (Nasal Therapy)
During this therapy, several drops of medicated oil are administered into each nostril. This opens and cleanses your nasal and sinus passages, enhancing the flow of oxygen to the brain. It may relieve allergy and sinus conditions and improve your memory as well. Nasyam is one of the important Panchakarma therapies. Nasyamis done after a medicated steam inhalation. This is a very important treatment for discomfort in the head region. It acts by removing the excess humours accumulated in the different sinus cavities and throat.
There are different kinds of Nasyams based on the type of medicines & nature body conditions.
Pradhama Nasyam: In this medicinal juices, medicinal powders are with the help of a tube blown into the nose.
Bruhana Nasyam: Medicated ghee and medicated milk are used in this type of Nasyam.
Navana Nasyam: Medicated oils and decoctions are used in this treatment.
Marshya Nasyam: Ghee or oil is used in Marshya Nasyam.
Pratimarshya Nasyam: In this type of Nasyam the little finger is dipped into medicated ghee and inserted into the nostrils which are gently massaged.
Swedhana (Herbal Steam Bath)
This treatment allows the Ayurvedic oils to penetrate deeper into the tissue, enhancing the detoxification process. It strengthens the immune system and moisturizes your skin, making it soft and smooth. Swedanam or Herbal Steam Bath is done with the help of a steam chamber to perspire the patient. Oil should be gently applied on the body and the patient is made to sit in the chamber where steam emanates from a boiling herbal decoction which is made of various herbs and medicated powder. The purpose of Swedana is to increase body temperature which opens the channel system resulting in increased circulation. This allows toxins to flow out of the body with sweat.
There are 2 types of Swedana (Herbal steam bath) in Ayurveda:
Full body herbal steam bath or Bashpa Swedana: This is given after a full body oil massage (Abhyanga). And is given in order to increase the benefits of Abhyanga. Through this process oil gets deeper into the skin and removes deep rooted toxins from the skin layers.
Localised steam bath (Nadi Sweadana): In this process herbelised steam is passed in to the specific regions of the body, often along energy lines in the body called nadis. It relieves pain and soreness in the muscles joints. And also, promotes blood circulation and restores flexibility in tensed and affected areas. This treatment is beneficial also for arthritis, immobility and Neuromuscular conditions.
Shirodhara is a unique form of ancient therapy of pouring oil on the forehead from a specific height and for a specific period continuously and rhythmically allowing the oil to run through the scalp and hair. It is a purifying and rejuvenating therapy made to eliminate toxins and mental exhaustion and relieve stress and any ill effects on the central nervous system. Shirodhara is also known as Third Eye Treatment of Lord Shiva. Shirodhara is used to heal chronic neuromuscular disorders and vata imbalances: hypertension, insomnia, depression, anxiety, headaches and restlessness. It can have a powerful spiritual effect on the mental and emotional wellbeing of the individual.
Yoga classes are also a part of slimming therapy, especially ashtanga yoga. You will sweat, blast calories and tone and shape your entire body, especially if you practice a more physically active style of yoga, such as Ashtanga and Vinyasa. Yoga calms your mind if practised along with meditation.
